Opening Blind Eyes

Phase 2 – Two Servants

The Servant’s mission is to bring sight, freedom, and light to those trapped in spiritual blindness and darkness.

Isaiah 42:1–9

“You will open the eyes of the blind. You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.” Isaiah‬ ‭42‬:‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Keywords: Sight, Freedom, Light, Deliverance, Restoration

As Isaiah continues describing the Servant, the mission becomes clear.

God says the Servant will come

to open the eyes that are blind

to free captives from prison

and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

These are powerful images. Blind eyes opened. Prison doors unlocked. People brought out of darkness and into light.

At first we might think Isaiah is speaking about physical conditions. But as the chapter unfolds, it becomes clear later in the same chapter as Isaiah speaks about Israel:

Israel is blind.

Israel is deaf.

The very people who were meant to bring God’s truth to the world cannot see the path themselves.

Which raises an important question. If Israel is blind, how can Israel open blind eyes? If Israel is captive, how can Israel release prisoners?

Isaiah is quietly leading the reader to an important realisation. It has to be another Servant who must come. A Servant who can accomplish what Israel cannot.

This Servant will bring light where there is darkness. He will open eyes that cannot see. He will release people trapped in spiritual prisons they cannot escape on their own.

These prisons are not always physical. Often they are the prisons of the heart.

Fear.

Shame.

Addiction.

Hopelessness.

The quiet belief that nothing will ever change. Isaiah is describing a Servant who breaks those chains.

Centuries later, when Jesus began His ministry, He would stand in the synagogue and read these words from Isaiah describing His very mission, bringing sight to the blind and freedom to captives.

The Servant Isaiah saw was not simply a teacher. He is the deliverer. The one who will bring people out of darkness and into the light of God. And that work continues today.

Because the mission of The Servant is still the same. Opening blind eyes. Freeing the prisoners. And bringing light into dark places.

Prayer

Father God,

Thank You for sending Your Servant who opens blind eyes and sets captives free.

Help us to see the ways we may still be walking in darkness. Open our eyes to Your truth. Lead us into the freedom and light You offer.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
