The Servant Who Is the Covenant

Phase 2 – Two Servants

God does not merely give a covenant, He sends The Servant who becomes the covenant and brings light to the nations.

Isaiah 42:1–9

“I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them.

And you will be a light to guide the nations.”Isaiah‬ ‭42‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Keywords: Covenant, Light, Mission, Nations, Faithfulness

Yesterday Isaiah introduced us to the Servant.

The Servant who will bring mishpat, God’s order, to the nations.

Now Isaiah reveals God speaking directly to The Servant:

“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you
and will make you to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the nations.” (Isaiah 42:6)

That line should stop us.

Normally a covenant is something God makes. A covenant is an agreement. A relationship established between God and His people.

But here The Servant is not simply under the covenant. The Servant is the covenant.

This is a remarkable statement. Israel had already broken the covenant God made with them.

The problem was not that God had failed. The problem was that His people had. And a just God cannot simply pretend that covenant failure does not matter.

Justice must be satisfied.

Faithfulness must be upheld.

So Isaiah reveals that God will send a Servant who does not simply announce a new covenant. He embodies it.

This covenant will be carried by a person. And the mission of this Servant will not stop with Israel. He will be a light for the nations.

The light of God will reach far beyond the borders of Israel. To the coastlands. To the distant peoples. To the ends of the earth.

Seven hundred years later, an elderly man named Simeon is standing in the temple in Jerusalem when Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to be presented before the Lord.

Simeon takes the child in his arms and says:

“My eyes have seen your salvation… a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:30–32)

Simeon recognises what Isaiah had foretold. The Servant has come. The covenant is no longer just a promise. The covenant has become a person.

Through Him the light of God will reach the world. And the work of restoring God’s order has begun.

Prayer

Father God,

Thank You that You are faithful to every promise You make. Thank You that You did not abandon Your covenant but fulfilled it through Your Servant.

Help us to know the light that You have brought into the world. And help us to live as people who walk in that light.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
