Why God Keeps Calling Us Back to Trust

January 21

Everything You Trust Will Either Stand or Fall

“then God will establish one of David’s descendants as king. He will rule with mercy and truth. He will always do what is just and be eager to do what is right.” Isaiah‬ ‭16‬:‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.” Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭28‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As we come to the final day of this third week of ‘Do Not Trust the Nations’, it’s worth pausing to notice something we’ve felt along the way.

There has been repetition. Themes revisited. Truths restated. Trust approached again and again from different angles. And that isn’t a weakness of Isaiah. It’s a kindness.

Because as human beings, we are not quick learners when it comes to trust. Not because we are foolish, but because we are pressured, distracted, shaped by fear, and constantly invited to place our confidence elsewhere.

Sometimes we need to hear the same truth ten different ways before it finally settles in our bones. And Isaiah keeps returning to the same core message because life keeps pulling us away from it.

Nations rise and fall.

Wealth promises security, then disappears. Power looks strong, until it isn’t. Wisdom claims control, until it reaches its limitations.

And in every case, God is gently, and firmly reminding His people, do not anchor your life to what cannot last.

Isaiah 16:5 speaks of a throne established not by force, fear, or ambition, but by steadfast love. And a kingdom marked by faithfulness, justice, and righteousness.

Hebrews echoes this truth centuries later, reminding us that we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Everything else will shake. Only one thing will stand.

If this feels repetitive, it’s because trust is not learned once. It is learned slowly. Often painfully. And usually through lived experience.

Most of us don’t abandon trust in God all at once. We drift. We substitute. We add alternatives. We hedge our bets. Or we keep God close, but not central. And yet, God remains patient and faithful.

He keeps speaking, inviting and calling us back. We don’t need to chase after the things of this world.

He is sufficient.

His plans are complete. His purposes are good. His kingdom is unshakeable.

Why does it take us so long to get there?

Because trusting God costs us control. Because surrender feels risky. Because peace sounds too simple for a complicated world.

And yet, here we are, perhaps older, maybe slower, but wiser, finally discovering that what He has been saying all along is true.

We can trust Him with our lives.

And not because He is easy to understand.
Or because He removes every challenge. And not because He explains every outcome.

But because He is worthy.

We are His creation. He is not surprised by us. And it should not surprise us that He knows what is best, and yet somehow, it still does.

This week has not been about discovering something new. It has been about allowing something true to finally take root.

Everything you trust will either stand or fall.

And the invitation before us is simple. Place your trust in what cannot be shaken.

Practice for Today

Today, take a few minutes to name what you believe you are trusting most right now.

Not what you say or hope you trust. But honestly, what is actually carrying the weight of your security.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I relying on to give me peace?

  • What do I get anxious about losing?

  • Where do I instinctively turn when things feel uncertain? What is my security?

Then, without shame or striving, bring that honestly before God. You don’t need to fix it today. And you don’t need to get it right.

Today, simply acknowledge it, and choose again to place your trust in the One whose kingdom cannot be shaken.

Sometimes trust doesn’t begin with confidence. Sometimes it begins with surrender.

Prayer

Father God, You know how easily we drift. You know how often we place our trust in things that feel solid but cannot last.

Thank You for Your patience with us. Thank You for speaking again and again, not because You are disappointed, but because You love us.

Today, we bring before You the things we have trusted in place of You. Our plans. Our strength. Our security. Our understanding.

We lay them down in front of You Lord and we trust You with our lives. Teach us, once more, to receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Help us to stop striving and start resting. To stop grasping and start trusting.

You are worthy.

You are faithful.

You know what is best for us.

We place our lives back into Your hands today.

In Jesus’ holy name we pray, Amen.
