Taste and See

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” - Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

This verse isn’t just a statement, it’s an invitation. An invitation to experience God personally and deeply.

“Taste and see…”

These are sensory words. They speak of firsthand experience, not distant belief. David is calling us to come near, to try, to encounter the goodness of God for ourselves. Like a meal that can’t be described until it’s tasted, God’s love must be experienced to be truly understood.

“…that the Lord is good.”

This is the truth David has discovered, that no matter the circumstances, the Lord remains good. Not only in theory, not only when life is smooth, but even in hardship, God’s nature is unchanging and His goodness is constant.

“Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

The blessing doesn’t come from striving, controlling, or performing. It comes from taking refuge, from choosing to hide in God’s presence, trusting His protection, and resting in His care. It is the posture of a heart that says, “You are my safe place.”

To taste and see is to come close. To trust and rest. To experience His goodness for yourself. Not just once, but daily, in every season.

Reflection

  • When was the last time you truly tasted the goodness of God in your life?

  • Where are you seeking refuge right now? In Him or in something else?

  • How can you slow down this week to experience God’s presence in a more personal way?

God’s goodness is not just to be believed, it’s to be experienced. He invites you today to come close, to take refuge, and to taste for yourself. The blessing is not in perfection, but in presence, in knowing that He is near, and He is good.

Prayer

Lord, I want to taste and see that You are good, not just to know it in my mind, but to experience it in my soul. Draw me close Lord. Help me to take refuge in You instead of running to lesser things. Open my eyes to Your goodness, and let me walk in the peace that comes from trusting You. Amen.
