Oh That You Had Listened

Phase 2 — Two Servants

God’s grace does not remove responsibility. His desire is to lead us into peace, but that peace is experienced through listening and obedience.

Passage: Isaiah 48:17–19

“Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river, and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.” Isaiah 48:18 (NLT)

Reflection

This is one of the most tender verses in Isaiah. “Oh, that you had listened…”

This is not anger or an accusation. This is longing. God is not standing distant here, issuing commands from afar. He is speaking as One who desired something better for His people.

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.”

Everything He gave them was for their good. Not for restriction or control.

Guidance. Direction. Life.

And yet, they did not listen. And here we see the cost. The result, not just consequence…
but missed peace. “You would have had peace flowing like a river…”

Not a moment of peace, or a temporary feeling. A steady, ongoing flow.

“…and righteousness like waves of the sea.”

Consistent. Rhythmic. Unstoppable.

This is what was available. This is what was offered. And it was missed. And not just missed instruction. Missed relationship.

There is a longing here, a desire from God that His people would choose well. Not simply to follow rules, but to choose Him. To choose relationship with Him.

He is leading and guiding. He is drawing us into a way of living that reflects who He is.

Because God is a God of order. Not rigid control, but right alignment.

Wholeness. Peace. Life as it was intended to be. And when we step outside of that, we don’t just break rules… We step into disorder.

Into confusion, unrest, a life that no longer flows as it should. Chaos. That is why this matters.

“Oh, that you had listened…”

Because what was on offer was not restriction… It was peace. Peace like a river.

This is the heart of God. Longing that we would choose Him. That we would trust Him. That we would walk with Him. And even here,
after they have not listened, His voice is still open. Still inviting and calling. Not just to better decisions, but back into relationship.

And the question remains: Will we listen?

Application - Pause and reflect:

Is there something I sense God has been saying to me that I have not acted on?

Where might I be delaying obedience, even though I know the direction?

Take one step in that direction today. Not everything, just the next step.

Prayer

Father God,

Thank You that You lead me for my good. You do not hold back from me, but guide me into life and peace.

Forgive me for the times I have heard Your voice but failed to respond. Help me to listen and to follow You.

Give me a heart that is quick to respond, and willing to trust Your leading. Let Your peace flow in my life as I walk in step with You.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
