Held in His Hand

Phase 3 – Grace as the Means

You may forget God, but He has not forgotten you

Passage: Isaiah 51:13–16

“And I have put my words in your mouth and hidden you safely in my hand. I stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations of the earth. I am the one who says to Israel, ‘You are my people!’” Isaiah‬ ‭51‬:‭16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Reflection

“You have forgotten the Lord your Maker…”

This is very direct. Matters of the human heart. Because we can be forgetful. Not necessarily rebellious or rejecting God, but forgetting Him.

We can find ourselves here more often than we realise. We don’t wake up and decide to walk away from God. Our days get busy, work pressures build, other voices get louder, and those other things fill our minds and we just drift.

And slowly, and quietly, we forget.

“You live in constant terror every day…” Fear fills the space where trust once was. Fear of people, outcomes, or fear of what might happen next.

And yet God says, “Why are you afraid of mere humans, who will wither like grass?” What we fear most is often what will last the least. And in the middle of that, God speaks.

“I, I am He…” Because He is not distant or removed from our reality. He is present.

“I have put My words in your mouth…” You are not without direction. You are not without truth. His voice has already been given to us.

“I have covered you with the shadow of My hand…” You are not exposed. Even when it feels like you are and the future feels uncertain. You are held.

How comforting this is. You are not exposed, you are held. There is so much grace here.

Because we all know this pattern. There are seasons where we feel close to Him. More intentional and present. And there are other times, when life gets busy, we get caught up in what is going on around us, and our focus drifts.

Not because we have rejected Him, but because we have simply forgotten. Forgotten spend time with Him, forgotten to invite Him into our thinking and decision making process.

And yet God, His grace is still there, unmoved and unchanged. Despite our shortcomings.

“You are My people.” He has not forgotten us.

Even when we are slow to come to Him, or when we take longer than we should to turn back.

And when we do, and we find what has always been true. Just like the prodigal son. The Father is not distant. He is not reluctant.

He is willing and waiting. Waiting for us to turn our face back toward Him. Not to earn our place again, but to return to it.

Remember who you belong to. “I am the one who says to Israel, ‘You are My people.’” This is identity. Spoken. Declared.

Before deliverance, before the cup is removed, and before everything is made clear, He reminds them (and us) of this. You are Mine.

So when fear rises, Come back here. When your mind runs ahead, Come back here. When you feel uncertain, exposed, or alone, Come back here.

You are not forgotten. You are held. You are His.

Prayer

Father God,

Forgive me for the times I forget You.

Not intentionally, but through distraction, fear, and the busyness of life. When I begin to rely on what I see around me, instead of trusting in who You are, draw me back to You again.

Remind me that I am not alone, that I am held in Your hand, and that You have already spoken truth into my life.

Thank You that my identity is not something I earn, but something that You declare.

I belong to You. Help me to live from that place of security and trust.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
