Woe to Those Who Will Not Wait

January 25

Week Four, Waiting Is Trust

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.” Isaiah‬ ‭28‬:‭16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” 1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Break It Down

This is a strong line from Isaiah, and it is meant to land with weight.

“Woe” is not God being petty or dramatic. It is a warning spoken with urgency, because the stakes are real. In Isaiah 28, God, through His prophet is confronting a people who have refused to wait on Him. They are looking for quicker solutions, safer alliances, faster certainty. They want stability without surrender.

And here is the key connection for this week, waiting and trust are not separate ideas. In Isaiah, to wait is to trust. And to trust is to wait.

So when the passage confronts those who will not wait, it is also confronting those who will not trust. Those who will not place their weight on God.

Trust Question

Where am I refusing to wait, because waiting would require me to trust God instead of controlling the outcome?

God’s Intention

What makes Isaiah 28:16 so beautiful is that God does not only warn. He also provides.

God says He is placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone, a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. That is not merely a metaphor for ‘good advice.’ It is God promising a foundation that can actually carry the weight of human life.

This is what waiting really is. Waiting is not empty time. Waiting is refusing to build on shaky ground. Waiting is choosing not to grab the nearest solution just because it is available. Waiting is staying with God long enough to build on what He has provided.

And this is why the warning exists. Woe to those who will not wait, because they are choosing unstable foundations while God is offering a sure one.

Weave It In

This is painfully modern. When life feels uncertain, we rush. We fix. We secure. We make backup plans. We look for the fastest path to relief.

We do this with money, if I can just get the finances sorted, I’ll feel safe.

We do this with relationships, if I can just get this resolved today, I’ll feel stable.

We do this with health, if I can just get a clear answer now, I can breathe.

We do this with the future, if I can just know what’s next, I can relax.

And sometimes the options in front of us look wise. They look responsible. They look like strength. But Isaiah is probing deeper, are we building from trust, or from fear. Are we moving with God, or running ahead of Him.

God’s promise is not that waiting will be comfortable. The promise is that whoever believes need never be shaken. That is not a promise of ease. It is a promise of stability. A life built on the cornerstone holds when the pressure comes.

Christ at the Center

Peter repeats Isaiah’s promise and makes the fulfillment unmistakable. The cornerstone Isaiah promised is Jesus.

This is not just a promise that something solid exists. It is a celebration that the promised Son has come. The cornerstone has been placed. King Jesus stands at the center of God’s rescue plan.

And because Jesus has come, everything changes. The veil was torn. Access was opened. Relationship with our Creator was restored. We are not trying to build our lives toward God, God came toward us.

So the invitation today is not, try harder to be patient. The invitation is, place your full weight on Christ, and wait from that place of safety.

Practice for Today

1) Name your “haste.”
What are you trying to force right now, a decision, an outcome, a timeline, a resolution.

2) Name your foundation.
What are you tempted to build on instead of Jesus, money, certainty, approval, control, your own strength.

3) Choose one act of waiting as trust.
Today, do one small thing that says, “Lord, I will not run ahead of You.”

It might be pausing before you send the message.
It might be delaying the rushed decision.
It might be praying before you plan.

Then speak this simply:
“Jesus, You are my cornerstone. I place my weight on You. I will wait.”

Prayer

Father God, Forgive me for the ways I refuse to wait, because waiting exposes my lack of trust. Forgive me for the times I rush to build on what is quick and visible instead of what is firm and true.

Thank You that You have not left me to figure out life on my own. Thank You for the cornerstone, firm, tested, precious, safe to build on.

Jesus, I choose again today to place my weight on You. When I feel the urge to run ahead, teach me to wait. When I feel pressure to control outcomes, give me faith. When I am tempted to trust other foundations, bring me back to You.

You are worthy. You are sufficient. You will not fail. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
