Why We Need a Better King

Feb 20

Ezekiel 34:23

And I will set over them one shepherd, my servant David. He will feed them and be a shepherd to them.

Throughout Scripture, the problem is not only that people fail. It is that leaders fail.

Kings promise protection. Governments promise justice. Strong personalities promise security. Even spiritual leaders promise guidance.

And again and again, they fall short.

Ezekiel 34 is God’s indictment of shepherds who fed themselves instead of the flock. They ruled harshly. They scattered the sheep. They used authority for personal comfort rather than sacrificial care.

And then God says something amazing: “I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David…”

Not another politician or a better version of the same system. But a different kind of King.

The human heart longs for leadership that is strong while being gentle, righteous but compassionate, powerful and yet self-giving. But no merely human king can handle that.

History proves it. Isaiah 1–39 proved it. And our own disappointments prove it. This is why we need more than reform.

We need a Shepherd-King. He does not demand loyalty to sustain his throne. He gives Himself to secure us.

The longing for such a king has been forming and the promise has been whispered. A better King is coming.

Selah.
