When God Acts, Let Him Receive the Glory

January 30

Week Five – Trust Lived Out in Real Life

Isaiah 37:36

“Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp.”

New Testament

1 Corinthians 1:29–31

“So that no one may boast before Him… Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Context & Meaning

This moment begins with a letter.

The Assyrian emperor sends written words to Hezekiah. The letter mocks trust in God. It lists defeated nations and dares the God of Israel to prove Himself.

Hezekiah does not respond to the letter. He does not negotiate or justify himself. Instead, he takes the letter into the temple. He spreads it out before the Lord. He places the threat where it truly belongs.

And in doing so, the issue is no longer between Judah and Assyria. It is between the Assyrian emperor and the living God.

When God Acts

God’s response is not rushed or defensive. Overnight, without human strategy or intervention, the Assyrian army is struck down. One hundred and eighty-five thousand soldiers are gone. The emperor returns home in defeat. And the Assyrian army never comes west again.

This is not coincidence. And this is not Hezekiah’s victory. This is God acting.

Reflection

Hezekiah did the right thing. He trusted God. He brought the problem honestly before Him.

But when God acts this clearly, there is no room for pride. There is no space for self-congratulation or quiet credit-taking.

We often trust God when we are desperate. But when the pressure lifts, it becomes harder to remember who carried us.

Pride wants to take the glory. And while Hezekiah and Judah are safe for now, we will soon see just how quickly pride has a tendency to follow victory. More on that tomorrow.

Gospel Thread (Jesus)

Paul reminds us that God works this way on purpose.

God acts so that no one may boast before Him. Not kings or nations. Not even those who trusted well. If there is glory, it belongs to God alone.

Practice

Today, pause and consider, where has God acted clearly in my life? Where might I have quietly taken some of the credit?

Name one place where you need to return the glory to Him.

Prayer

Father God, You are the one who acts when we cannot. Thank You for carrying battles we were never meant to fight alone.

Guard my heart from pride when You move. Teach me to trust You not only in crisis, but also in comfort. May my life point back to You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Closing Invitation

Trust does not end when God answers. When God acts, let Him receive the glory.
