Waiting and Renewed Strength
Strength comes before movement.
Isaiah 40:27–31
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
We’ve just seen Isaiah enlarge our view of God.
Creator.
Sovereign.
Incomparable.
Now Isaiah does something honest and he lets the people speak.
“Why do you say… my way is hidden from the Lord?”
That is exile talking.Exile for Israel meant Babylon. The loss of their land. Loss of temple. And ultimately they lost control.
But exile wasn’t just about their geography or location. It was the feeling that God had gone quiet. That He did not see their situation and that He was no longer acting.
We may not have been dragged off into another nation, but exile for us still comes in modern forms.
It can look like an on going situation that will not resolve. A season that stretches longer than you expected. Prayer that remains unanswered. A loss that reshapes everything in your life. Feeling out of control and not sure what God is doing.
Exile is the space where you quietly ask, “Does God even see this?”
Isaiah answers that question directly. The Lord is everlasting. He does not grow tired. He does not grow weary. His understanding is beyond ours.
The problem is not that God is exhausted. The problem is that we are. And this is where Isaiah reshapes our thinking.
We often focus on soaring. But Isaiah says something more important first.
Those who wait on the Lord renew their strength.
Strength comes before movement.
Waiting comes before running.
Renewal comes before soaring.
And waiting here is not passive. It is trust. Choosing not to take control in ways that move you away from God. Choosing not to assume He has forgotten you. Instead, staying steady when nothing seems to be changing.
And please notice the progression.
Soar.
Run.
Walk.
Sometimes faith feels like soaring. Other times it feels like running hard. Most of the time it feels like walking and not giving up.
Not fainting or collapsing. Just continuing.
Ever felt like that?
Rebuilding trust means accepting that God’s timing is not neglect. Waiting is not punishment. It is dependence. It’s a choice.
And renewed strength is not something we manufacture. It is something He gives us. So if you find yourself in a form of exile right now, where you feel unseen or stuck or stretched beyond yourself, this passage is not asking you to pretend. It is asking you to wait.
To trust.
And to receive strength for the next step.
Today, please take the time to read Isaiah 40:27–31. Ask yourself honestly where waiting feels hard right now. Then bring that to Him.
Prayer
Father God,
You see what we are carrying. You know where we feel tired. Help us not to assume You have forgotten us. Teach us to wait on You.
Renew our strength for what is in front of us today. And keep us steady.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
