Focused for The Father
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” - Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
Reflection
There are so many demands on our time, good things, urgent things, things people expect of us. And yet, in the midst of all that activity, we can find ourselves spread thin, stressed, or even spiritually dry. Why? Because we’ve drifted from focus. God’s focus for this season of our lives.
A dear friend recently reminded me of this critical truth: 'Let’s be focused.' The devil doesn’t always tempt us with evil, sometimes he just wants us busy. Busy enough that we miss the very thing God has called us to. This is a call to clarity, to pruning, and to freedom. Let’s walk through this together.
Scripture Insights
Time Is a Gift – Steward It Wisely
“Be very careful, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity…” - Ephesians 5:15–16 (NIV)
We’re not promised tomorrow. Each day carries assignments from heaven. Living with intention is how we walk in wisdom. This means not just doing more, but doing what matters most to God.
Focus Is a Weapon – Use It Like Paul
“I am focusing all my energies on this one thing. Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead…” - Philippians 3:13 (NLT)
Paul had every reason to be distracted. He had a painful past, ongoing pressure, and plenty of ministry needs. But his clarity came from one thing, pleasing Jesus. Like him, we need to ask, What’s my “one thing” right now?
'No' Can Be a Holy Word
“Martha, Martha… you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is necessary…” - Luke 10:41–42
Saying 'No' is not selfish, it’s obedience. Jesus Himself praised Mary’s focus while gently correcting Martha’s busyness. Even good things like service, ministry and opportunities, must be weighed against what the Lord is asking of you today. 'No' often means 'not now', and that’s okay. Saying no gives space for God to speak and lead.
Focus Leads to Fruit, Not Just Activity
“Remain in me… and you will bear much fruit.” - John 15:5
Busyness does not equal fruitfulness. Fruit comes from abiding, from staying focused on Jesus and what He’s called us to do. Not from chasing every need, every invitation, or every voice.
Reflections
• What am I currently committed to that may not be God’s assignment for me right now?
• Where am I saying 'yes' too quickly without praying first?
• What would change in my life if I focused on 'one thing' like Paul?
• Do I trust God enough to say 'No' and rest in His timing?
• What helps me to re-align when I feel pulled in too many directions?
Prayer
Lord, teach me to number my days. Show me what matters most in Your eyes. Help me to say “No” to lesser things and “Yes” to Your call. I want to walk in wisdom, not weariness and in focus, not fear. Strip away the distractions, silence the noise, and center me on You. May my life bear fruit that lasts, as I remain in You. Amen.
