Reflection
“The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”
After everything God has said, after revealing the Servant, after declaring restoration, and this is the response.
Not rebellion, but a huge miss and a deep misunderstanding of who God is. And we hear that and we recognise it, because if we are honest, we have said the same thing, if not with our words, then with our hearts.
And the issue is not just pain, it is perspective. We measure God through the lens of human love, through parents who tried but fell short, and through relationships that were conditional. For some of us, through love that was inconsistent, earned, or withdrawn.
So when God says, “I love you” “I have not forgotten you” we can be prone to hear it through a broken definition. But God responds by lifting our eyes. “Can a mother forget her nursing child?”
The strongest human picture of love, nurture, care and connection. And yet even that, “Though she may forget, I will not forget you.”
God is not like us. His love is not fragile and His memory is not dependent on our performance. His commitment is not conditional. This is (Hesed) covenant love.
Hesed. Unbreakable. Faithful. Steadfast.
And then He gives us the image, “I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” Not written lightly or recorded temporarily. Engraved. Permanent. Intentional. Costly.
Stop for a moment and think on that! Let this sink in and dwell on it!
You are not at risk of being forgotten, you are held before Him, always. And this grace goes deeper, because God cannot ignore sin. Cause and effect is real. So how can He love like this?
Because the Servant is coming (Has come). The One who will step in to history. The One who will bear what we cannot bear. The One who will make grace possible, without compromising justice.
And through the cross, this image becomes even clearer. Hands. Marked. The covenant written not just in words, but in His own body.
So when the thought rises, “God has forgotten me” we return here. And not to our feelings or circumstances. But to His hands.
You are not forgotten. You are engraved. Selah.
Prayer
Father God,
Forgive me for the times I have misunderstood Your love. Where I have measured You by my earthly experiences, instead of trusting Your truth.
Thank You that Your love for me is greater than human love, steadier than anything I have known.
Jesus, thank You that You are the Servant King who made this grace possible. Thank You that You carry the marks that remind me of Your covenant with me.
Help me to slow down, to spend time with You, and to learn what Your love truly is. When doubt rises, anchor me again in Your faithfulness.
I am not forgotten. I am held by You.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
