The Anointed One

Phase 4 – Grace Produces Righteousness

Good news, healing, freedom, comfort.

Passage: Isaiah 61:1–3

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come…” Isaiah 61:1–2 (NLT)

New Testament:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” Luke 4:18–21 (NLT)

Reflection

This is the turning point made clear. We have already seen the problem. Sin separates us from our holy God. No one could fix it. There was no one to stand in the gap.

And then God stepped in. Now we see how. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me…”

More than a promise, this is the answer. Up to this point, the issue has been clear. God’s people could not produce righteousness.

Not because they lacked instruction or effort, but because something was missing.

God had been with them all along, but they needed more. They needed God within them.

And here it is. The Spirit. “The Lord has anointed me…” This is the Anointed One.

The One who would not only act for the people, but make transformation possible within them.

And what does He bring? Good news.

Good news, to the poor, the brokenhearted, the captive, the prisoner, those who mourn.

“You are being set free.” Freedom. Healing. Comfort. Restoration. Relationship. This is what grace produces.

And then comes an important line: “…that they will be called oaks of righteousness…”

This is the result, not fragile or temporary, but established, strong, rooted.

But notice this carefully, they are not called: “those who made themselves righteous.”

They are called: “oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord…” Because this is God’s work.

So here is the full picture. God acts. The Spirit anoints. Transformation begins. And what could not be produced before, is now grown by Him.

This is why Isaiah 60 makes sense. This is why light shines. This is why nations are drawn. Because this is how it happens.

And this is exactly what Jesus declared. When He stood in the synagogue and read these words, He said: “Today this Scripture is fulfilled…”

Not future or still to come. This is fulfilled.

And it is personal, because this is not just what He does for us, it is what He begins to do in us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Thank You that You did not leave us to fix what we could not fix. Thank You that You stepped in, and that through You, the Spirit is now at work in us for those who believe. Thank You for good news, for healing, for freedom, and for comfort.

Do in me what I cannot do for myself. Establish me as something strong and lasting, planted by You. Let Your life grow within me, and let Your work be seen through me.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
