Hesed Remembered
Phase 4 – Grace Produces Righteousness
God’s covenant love defines His actions.
Passage: Isaiah 63:7–14
“In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.” Isaiah 63:9 (NLT)
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” Lamentations 3:22–23 (NLT)
Reflection
We continue down the staircase. Can you fell it? God has acted in justice, He has begun restoring what was broken, and now we are shown what drives Him. “I will tell of the Lord’s unfailing love…”
This is not a change in direction, it is a deeper revelation. What sits beneath everything God has done, is hesed. And Hesed is not a simple word. It carries, covenant love, faithfulness, mercy and commitment. This is not love that comes and goes, this love remains.
“In all their suffering, He also suffered…” This is remarkable, God is not distant, He is present, “He personally rescued them…”. He didn’t delegate or assign the task to someone else. This is who He is.
And then the honest assessment. “They rebelled…” Even in the face of this love, they turned away. And it’s personal to us, because this is not just their story, it is ours too. Why is it that we struggle? Even when we know what is right, when we want to be faithful, and yet we are so drawn by other things. Comfort, control, desire, distraction. The pull is real and yet, God’s hesed remains.
This is the contrast then, we are inconsistent. He is not. “They turned against Him…” “But He still led them…”
Even in discipline, correction and distance, His covenant love does not disappear, and this fact shapes everything we are seeing now. God does not act randomly, He does not restore reluctantly, He is not driven by reaction. He is driven by hesed.
This is why He rescues, He restores, He carries. And the echo of this is clear, “The faithful love of the Lord never ends…”
So here is what we are seeing. Grace is not temporary. Grace is not fragile. Grace flows from a God who is faithful, even when we are not.
And this is the invitation, not to try harder, but to trust Him deeper. To stop relying on our consistency, or lack of and to rest in His.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your hesed, Your faithful, covenant love that does not fail. Thank You that even when I am inconsistent, You remain steady and true.
Help me to see clearly the things that pull my heart away from You, and give me the grace to turn back again, quickly. Teach me to trust not in my own strength, but in Your faithfulness.
And let my life be shaped more and more by Your love, as I learn to walk with You each day.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
